Pope reflects on instigators of war

Pope Francis has reiterated his call for peace and unity in Iraq, however his focus now is on those who have perpetuated the conflict and instability in the Middle East.

At the first weekly audience following his four day trip to Iraq, it seems the realities of war and conflict continue to occupy Pope Francis.

Some may feel the pope’s question is in fact rhetorical; he knows the answer but is in fact speaking to those who have funded and profiteered from the perpetual cycle of war in the Middle East.

In a similar vein, commander of the Christian Popular Mobilization Units, Rayan al-Kaldani, who met the pope during his visit, spoke out on Saudi-backed channel Baghdad Satellite TV.

The systematic radicalization and brainwashing of unsuspecting individuals took place on mass. The persecution of minorities was normalized to spread chaos and rip communities apart. In this vein the pope reiterated his call for unity.

The answer to this is yet to be seen -- Will the effort to unite be stronger than the effort to dominate and profit from war and misery?
